The board of Hamilton Operatic Society wishes to acknowledge the many decades of service by Dave Smith, who retired from his position on the board at the recent AGM.
Dave has been involved in the Society since 1984, a co-opted member of the Board of Management since 2000, and an elected member since 2002. Dave was also Chairman of the Board of Management from 2006 until 2008.
Dave is a Life Member of the Society and has a raft of knowledge about theatre technologies, large-scale productions and budgets. The breadth of his institutional knowledge is gained through many years of service and is not easily learned or replaced. This expertise has been invaluable for the board as he looked at show choices with a wide lens; financially, practically, historically and with an eye to what the audience would appreciate.
Behind the scenes was a place where Dave was also comfortable and he was generous with sharing his expertise, tools, time, books, and even finances with any who needed them. As one life member said about Dave “...he has been on stage, backstage, set builder and head fly man extraordinaire…”. In this arena, he was widely appreciated by many.
Dave remains a committed HOS life member, which is a reflection of his dedication in itself and we look forward to continuing that part of the journey with him. We wish him all the best with his involvement as a new trustee of the One Victoria Trust and we are sure that he will bring his considerable expertise to them as well.
